Bella's cicada shells

What a big morning counting cicada shells!  They were divided up and spread around our maths learning tables where each group made groups of ten so they could skip count easily.  Some tables had 160 cicadas, that is 16 groups of ten.  One group had 70 cicadas, that was 7 groups of ten.
Lots of skip counting in tens to 100, then in 100s to get our final total of 915 cicada shells.
The closest guess came from Keearas' whanau with Ashleigh guessing 889.  Ka pai Ashleigh!

  1. I tried to use a math strategy to work this out too. I tried to guess how much space 150 cicadas would take up. I guessed 5 lots of 150 cicadas were in the container. But I think it was 6 lots. Well done Ashleigh.

  2. Yes it was hard. After we had all guessed we gave the children a handful each and they made groups of 10.We then recorded all the groups of 10 and got the answer. They were really engaged in using materials that they are familiar with.
